Schindler's List

Schindler’s List is a 1993 movie. This story is mainly about how Amon murdered and tortured Jews, and Oskar Schindler, a German entrepreneur who was instrumental in saving the lives of over one thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust. This is an interesting film despite the film is in the black and white version.

            Overall in the movie, Amon, an SS officer has impressed me with his evil and cruel personality. The moment he arrived in Krakow to initiate construction of a labour camp, Plaszow, and to take over control of the Ghetto, the bloody scenes began. He tends to kill people without any sympathy and empathy. When a Jewish engineer explains that a foundation has been improperly laid, and for this he has her shot in the head. I was so shocked by his unreasonable action. He killed those who did not work hard for him, and also those who are worthless. His evilness does not concern about the humanity but he cares more of his own profits. His selfishness and cold-bloodedness caused the death of many Jewish which he did not even care the feelings of those Jewish family members when they have lost the important one in life. His is not only taking pleasure in murdering and torturing, but he considers it is an integral part of his job. Amon did not kill Helen because he enjoys her sexually. At this point, I have thought of how realistic the society actually is, which the darkness and grey area in a society are more than the pureness.  

The moment when Oskar telling him that he kills and tortures people does not mean of having power but justice. People scared of him are not because of power, but justice. Oskar told him that, forgive people’s mistakes is the one who have real power to control. After this scene, I thought Amon will stop killing when I saw he forgives a young lady who nearly being killed by an Army because she smoked while she was working. His humanity does not remain long. When he decided not to shoot a young boy for did not clean his bathtub properly, but after reflecting, he decided to be firm to his stand, hence, he shoot him from the back when he was walking away. Amon is the worst person that I have ever seen; he has never taken life seriously. He has so much fun in killing people.

The second character who has impressed me with his good personality is Oskar Schindler. In all the Jewish heart, I believe he is a hero to those who have being saved by him in his list. Schindler was a cold-hearted businessman who is only interested in profit. After meeting with the girl in the red coat, he transformed into a good guy who covertly assisted his workers and save them from persecution. I always believe an individual will change when he or she meets with someone who can completely change his or her weaknesses into strengths. Through this scene, Schindler has become a hero among Jewish which his sacrifices have been appreciated by them. When Amon gave the order to destroy all killed bodies and ship the whole population to Auschwitz, Schindler prevails upon Goeth to let him keep his workers, so that he can move them to a factory in his old home of Zwittau-Brunnlitz. This list of "skilled" inmates was Schindler’s List, and for many of the inmates of Plaszow camp, being on the list meant the difference between life and death. Schindler saved 1000 of Jews life. I sympathised with those who have been saved by Schindler. They are lucky enough compared to those who died. At this point, I have to believe that, sometimes, life really depends on your luck instead of hard work.  

The most interesting part in this movie is when Schindler is celebrating his birthday, he kissed every lady. This is my first time to see a birthday man has such a great opportunity to kiss every woman in the party. Even though this is an old film, I was really shocked by their actions. I think I am more old fashion and tradition than this group of people which I cannot accept the fact that, a man can kiss every lady in a birthday party. I am curious if is it a kind of respect towards the birthday boy.  

Grace is Gone

This is a drama film which portrayed a father who cannot bring himself to tell his two daughters that their mother, a soldier in the American Army, has just been killed on a tour of duty in Iraq. This film is interesting and meaningful as I saw determination, struggles and love in a father that tried to keep the news and brought his daughters for a short trip.

            Stanley, the father plays a main character in the film. He lives with his two daughters while his wife, Grace, serves in Iraq. I sympathized for Stanley when he received the news of his wife has been killed in combat. In fact, he pretends there is nothing happened in front of his daughters and he dreaded having to tell his daughters of their mother’s death. Stanley struggling with his emotions, he cannot cry in front of the kids. After watching this film, I asked my spouse, how if one day he has two daughters and he lost his wife? I was shocked with his answer; he wants he wife but not daughters. I believe it is very important for a man to have his wife to stay together with him in a marriage. A partner plays an important role in our life that always support, motivate, experience, and inspire each other in every moment of life. I believe it is very hard for a father to bring two daughters alone without the supportive from his spouse. After watching this movie, I realised it is very hard for a single parent to bring up their kids. Stanley keeps the secret of the kids’ mother death and he has to smile in front of them. When he decided to bring his kids to Enchanted Gardens, I can see it is a short reality escape trip.  When they arrived at their grandmother house, Stanley’s brother, John is the only one at home. He encourages three of them out for lunch (it is actually a dinner time) which obviously that he is totally sad and cannot differentiate the time. He finally breaks down and mourns Grace. I relieved when he finally crying out because I cannot imagine how painful and sad Stanley is and I feel him, I know Stanley miss Grace a lot but the truth is, Grace dies.

            Stanley daughters named Heidi and Dawn. Their personalities are totally different. According to birth order theory, Heidi as an older sister plays a more independent role, mature, and responsible. Despite two of them miss their mother a lot, Dawn’s personality is totally opposite of Heidi. Throughout the trip, Heidi did call the school and ask for homework. She is independence enough to settle down all her stuff which she is responsible with even though she is only a 12 years old girl. She takes her responsible to take care of her younger sister as well. When Dawn was missing in a shopping mall, she was worried; she was the first person who realised the missing of Dawn instead of her father. When her father, Stanley is talking with Dawn in a small toy house, she did not disrupt their conversation. I can see a strong girl who is protective her family. When she heard the news of her mother’s death (which Stanley finally chose to tell the truth to his daughters after the trip), she acted like all the kids, she cried and does not believe this is real. Heidi wrote a eulogy and read in her mother’s funeral. My reflection in this film is, me as an older daughter in my family, I always take my responsibility in my family. I want to protect my family all the time and I have learned to cherish every precious moment with them. I have also learned to appreciate every sacrifice given by my parents, and one day, I am going to give them a better life. 

Sybil

Sybil is an American mystery drama film which has talked about a girl named Sybil who is having a psychological disorder, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). This movie is interesting as there are many surprises when more and more personality came out from the main character. I did not expect Sybil suffers from DID but other psychological disorder because the beginning of the film did not seem Sybil is having DID until the moment when Dr Wilbur found out Vickie, who called her at late night, which she is actually one of Sybil’s personality. Meanwhile, the ending of this film is awesome because Sybil finally recovered from DID with the help of Dr Wilbur.

 

            The story began with Sybil as a school teacher, who seemed very lovely and warm individual but started to act weirdly when she saw a white hair old lady at the park. When she saw white hair, she automatically think of her mama, who constantly abused her when she was young. When this scene was shown without telling the reason why Sybil scares of white hair, I thought Sybil was kidnaped during her childhood, hence, she revived her bad and fearful childhood memory, but surprisingly, her mother was the one who abused her by kicking, hitting, and locked her in a wheat bin in the barn. After that incident, she is given a neurological test by Dr Wilbur, a psychiatrist. Sybil admits having blackouts and fears and these conditions are getting worse. Dr Wilbur theorizes that the incidents are a kind of hysteria, all related to a deeper problem. She asks Sybil to return at a later date as she wanted to know more about Sybil. Throughout the whole treatment process, Dr Wilbur is a good and responsible psychiatrist who does really care her client genuinely.     

 

           According to DSM 5 (APA, 2013), there are criteria for DID.  The first criterion of DID is the disruption of identity characterized by two or more distinct personality. Sybil has several personalities with her, such as, Vickie who knows everything about Sybil; Peggy, the little girl; Vanessa, who plays the piano; Marcia, who is suicidal and wants to kill Sybil; and Ruthie, the pre-verbal baby role. The moment when Vickie called Dr Wilbur at late night, I truly believed that she is Sybil’s friend, I did not expect Vickie is actually one of the personality came out from Sybil until Vickie goes to meet Dr Wilbur and tell her everything about Sybil. The interesting past in this film is every personality of Sybil will introduce themselves to Dr. Wilbur. 

 

           The second criterion is the recurrent gaps in the recall of everyday events or traumatic events that are inconsistent with ordinary forgetting.  Sybil could not remember what is happening during her blackout period, she forgot what she has done when her other personality came out. Nonetheless, there are many incidents have proved that Sybil could not remember anything about what other of her personality did. Sybil did not know that she can play the piano well; she was so surprised when Dr. Wilbur played the recording tape (when Vanessa is playing piano), she cannot believe that she can play Mozart pieces. When Marcia wanted to jump from the top of a high building, fortunately, she has been saved by her neighbour. She could not remember this has happened after her turning back to Sybil. Basically, she could not remember anything that her other personality did. The following criterion is the symptoms caused clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. It can be clearly seen that Sybil does not have a job and she has no friend accept the boyfriend in a neighbour.

 

I personally sympathized with Sybil because she did not grow up in a healthy family. Sybil's father denied his wife abuses Sybil even thoughhe knew his wife is diagnosed with paranoid Schizophrenia. My definition of healthy family is defined as children could have to be raised up in lovely, warm, peaceful, and harmony family. There should not exist of child abuse, and parents should always space out their time for accompanying their children. I sympathised Sybil experiences since she is young. It is not easy for an individual to suffer DID alone without the support of family. 

The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense is an American horror-thriller film. This film tells the story of Cole who is able to see and talk to the dead and a child psychologist who tries to help him.

            Cole is a character which his experiences have sympathised me. He is a kid who always lives in fear. He did not tell anyone about his secret in which he can actually see dead people around him all the time. When he met those dead people, he will go and hide in his little camp with many figurines inside which he has stolen from a church. I was worried him when he is facing with those scary moments himself. I meant, how can a little boy face with those horrible scenarios alone even me myself cannot take this alone. Cole faced with horrible experiences, even though he is afraid, he did not tell his mother and others because he knows no one will believe him. I still remember one of the scenes was the moment when a teacher is teaching history in the class. They talked about the history of the school and Cole was responded aggressively by shouting “shuttering Stanley”. I believe Cole was not shouted at the teacher but the ghost he had seen, even though I cannot see the present of it in the film. Everyone takes Cole mentally went wrong. No one likes him and even the invitation to a birthday party of one of his friends was actually invited by the friend’s mother. I sympathised Cole when he cannot tell everyone his secret while he is facing with those people who dislike him and tried to bully him as well as his mother, Lynn who tried to help him.

  

As a psychology student, I do not believe there are ghosts around us because again, this cannot explain by science. Cole did not believe anyone but he finally trusted Dr. Malcom and he decided to tell his secret to Dr. Malcom. Dr. Malcom did not trust him initially, but finally, believe the truth that he can see ghosts. The interesting part is the moment when Dr Malcom found Cole has the hallucinations and need to be hospitalised, he first response was he cannot help Cole. I believe, this will be the first response of every psychologist as he or she cannot experience the same feelings and situations of Cole. In fact, psychologists are more believed in something that can be explained by science. When disbelief turned into a belief, Dr Malcom found out there might be present of ghosts as Cole said when he heard the previous recording with another patient. Dr Malcom asked Cole try not to be scared of ghosts, they may need help from him. The first time when he tried to face a female ghost, he was afraid. He finally calms down himself and tries to communicate with “her”, actually “she” needed his help to clarify the truth that has caused “her” death. He went to the patient room (the room she stayed before) and took a box from “her”, he passed it to “her” father in the funeral and all the people were shocked when they realised “her” mother was the killer. Cole felt relaxed and he started to face with ghosts with courage, and he finally decided to tell his mom the truth that he can see ghosts and his grandmother always visits him.     

The most unexpected part in this film was the moment when Dr Malcom only realised he has dies. Throughout the film, no one realised, perhaps everyone has forgotten the death of Dr. Malcom in the first scene when he was gotten shot from Vincent, his old patient, after watching all the interesting parts about Cole.

Whale Rider

Whale Rider is a New Zealand- German family film. The story line is about Paikea, a twelve-year-old Maori girl who wants to become the chief of the tribe but the tradition lead to her grandfather Koro believes this role is only reserved for first-born son in a family. Paikea struggles in earning his grandfather’s acknowledgement and to prove worthy of herself to be the new chief in the tribe.

            Throughout the film, we can see sexism happened in this environment. Koro, as a current chief in the tribe is very concern about the gender of first born baby of his son. Unfortunately, Paikea’s twin brother died which has disappointed Koro’s hope in finding new chief. Koro did not allow his son, Porourangi to name his daughter ‘Paikea’, which is the name of the whale rider (their descendant) just because Paikea is not a male.  Even though he has changed his attitude towards his granddaughter afterwards, when it is time to find new chief in the tribe, he changed his attitude towards Paikea. During the training period for all first born son in the tribe, Paikea did not allowed to join the training just because she is not a male.

            We can also see the principle of gender stereotype apply in Koro’s traditional thought. When Koro’s started a cultural school for first-born son on the tribes to teach them the traditional customs and qualities of a chief. Koro’s ignored Paikea’s ability to be a chief because she is a female and traditionally, only male is allowed to be the chief. I still remember one of a scene, when Koro, Paikea and her grandmother is having dinner together, Koro’s are angry, and he asked Paikea to clean up the floor because this is female role in the cultural.

            Nontheless, cognitive dissonance, the feeling of discomfort experiences by Koro when he has different beliefs in finding out the new chief at the same time. This can be semmed in Koro's character obvilusly when he knows Paikea is a destined leader of the tribe but he ignores the ability of Paikea and looks for other first-born son as next chief in the tribe. When he realised Paikea won in the random fight with a seemed talented leader male, he is very angry and asked Paikea to apologise until she mean it. We can see Koro ignores Paikea talented leadership happened here. Another scene of cognitive dissonance is the moment when he thought there must be a young boy who can find the rei puta, the whale tooth, that he threw inside the sea. He is very disappointed and depressed with this evidence. The moment when he witnessed Paikea save the dying whale, she can connect with the descendant, and the scene when his wife gives him the rei puta that has found by Paikea, he only admit Paikea as the next leader in the chief.  

.           The interesting part of this film is the scene when Paikea can connect, and call the descendant. To me, this scene cannot be explained by science as I have never seemed this happened in my life. Overall, this is an interesting movie when we can see the struggles met by Koro in finding next chief by denying Koro’s talented ability and Koro’s challenges in proving herself can be the chief in the tribe.  

Forget Paris

Forget Paris is a romantic film which has talked about the intimate relationship between an NBA referee, Mickey and an independent working woman whose lives are interrupted by marriage, Ellen. The story began in a restaurant in New York City. Andy prepared to introduce his good friends to his fiancée, Liz. He began to tell the love story of mickey and Ellen while they are waiting for the arrivals of others.  

  

            The components of intimacy, passion and commitments seemed in the relationship between Mickey and Ellen. They fell in love with each other in Paris after they have met several times. Ellen brought Mickey to walk around Paris and they had enjoyed time spent together. They danced, kissed and hugged in Paris. Mickey spontaneously decides to delay his flight return to the United States as he did not want to leave Ellen. Mickey is forced to return to the United States as the NBA season begins. Their intimate relationship has experienced long run of challenges but their love toward each other has let them stay together. 

            According to Festinger (1957), cognitive dissonance happens when individuals’ belief is incongruent with the action performed.  Mickey and Ellen had showed an example of how cognitive dissonance influenced their relationship after they married. Mickey likes his job as an NBA referee but his wife, Ellen wanted him to quit his favorite job so that he can have more companion time for her. After resigning his job, mickey found another job, salesman. Though Mickey has more time to accompany Ellen, he is unhappy with his job. Problems began when cognitive dissonance is happening among them. They quarrel with each other and Mickey decided to go back to his original job after the advice from his friend.  After getting back to be NBA referee, the intimate relationship has some changes. Finally, they choose to compromise by respecting each other’s personal life and they end up with the happy life.   

After marrying, they faced with a lot of challenges like different working time, lesser companion, and the involvement of the third party. They always missed communicating with each other which they did not actually mean with what they had said. They had experienced the changes after marrying. They struggled a lot with the changes but they chose to compromise. After watching this movie, I learned the important of communication between couples which can really affect the intimacy between each other. The honeymoon period does not last forever, and I learned how to compromise and be patient in an intimate relationship when there are new changes happen.    

Strictly Ballroom

Strictly Ballroom is a 1992 Australian romantic comedy film. This film tells the story of an Australian ballroom dancer, Scott and his struggle to establish his unique personal style of dance steps to win the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Dancing Championship. Scott’s steps have been opposed by all the ballroom dancers including his mother because his steps are not strictly ballroom.

In the whole story, I can see the value of determination in Scott. Even though Scott was opposed by people around him, he still wants to use his own unique steps to dance. Her original partner did not agree with him, and she chose to change her partner. The moment everyone is opposing his idea, there is a lady named Fran who is not a dancer is very interested in his unique dancing ideas. Scott started to teach Franc the ways to dance strictly ballroom as the hope is there when someone wants to be his dancing partner. Through whole the way of practices, there is no one agreed with them. Scott did not give up his determination when everyone wants him to conform to original dancing steps. He had finally stronger his determination when he has met with Fran’s family. Franc’s grandmother and father teach him the steps and rhythms, he very enjoys when he is dancing together with her family.

      

            The value of conformity can be seen in all the dancers in the film except Scott. Scott is a maverick dancer who wants to create his personal unique dancing steps in winning the competition. All the dancers opposed to his new steps including his mother who has tried hard to stop Scott from dancing incorrectly. Despite Scott knowing that breaking rules would lead to losing the competition, he did not conform to them. Even though Scott lost the competition, his dance partner, Liz and the approval everyone, he still did not conform to the original strict ballroom moves. In the last competition of the film, he finally dancing with his new partner, Franc by using what he had learned from her family. In the end, this non-conformity led to a memorable performance.

However, romance scene has always caught my attention. The intimate love fulfilled with commitments, intimacy, and passion. This can be seen in between the interaction of Fran and Scott. From the movie, Scott and Fran share proximity when they are dancing and practising together. When Scott wants Fran to be his new partner, they did spend long hours of time in practising dance together in the dancing studio. The power of love has been shown when Scott wants to dance in his own way and Fran wanted to dance with him in Scott's way. Both Scott and Fran shares mutual liking to each other. The intimacy between Scott and Franc can be shown when they are dancing together. Though Fran was the one who fell in love towards Scott, her love did encourage and inspire Scott when he is opposing by all the people around him. After the interesting training with Fran and her family, Scott fell in love toward Fran. I would like to think their similarity in interest can lead them to be a good couple in the intimate relationship as they can practise and join competition together. The honours of winning competitions would be their best memories when they are getting older. 

Lastly, Scott's family and Fran's family do express their love and caring in different ways. In the whole movie, Scott's mother did not support Scott when he needs support from his lovely family. His mother shows her love in wanting Scott dance in original dancing steps and she had found the best dancing partner for him. On the other hand, Fran's father did show his love in teaching them the steps in dancing and they did enjoy it happily. I can see the passion of Fran's father and grandmother in dancing through their facial expression. Fran's family always showing the positive support even though her father initially did not allow Fran to dance. A sentence "Listen to the rhythm, do not be fear" from Fran's grandmother and the rhythms clap by Scott's father and others did encourage as well as motivate Franc and Scott to dance during the competition though someone are trying to stop them from dancing on the stage. They finally get approved from all the people and lead the audients to dance together with them.   

Running on Empty

This film is a story of a countercultural couple, Annie and Arthur on the run from FBI and how one of their son Danny started to have his own life. Yet the crisis of this family is very much relevant to what every family has going through. The journey of this family is just like an adventure, they have to keep moving to a new place to avoid the caught of FBI. The story is started when they have moved to a new town. 

Arthur plays a father and husband role. His character as a father is just same as every father in the real world who always making sure every family member is in the safe zoom. He plays a very important role to be a role model of his kids and make sure they do not disclose their real identity to public. I can see Arthur as a father, he wants to keep his family close just like every father does. This can be seen in the scene when Danny wants to study at Julliard but he do not allowed Danny to do so because he knows once he give the permission, he may never see his son. The father-son relationship showed the greatness of love, Arthur has finally allowed his son to stay at the town to continue his study at the school to pursue his dream. I believe this is a great and hard decision for every parent as their kid will going to leave them temporary. A very special scene in this film between Arthur and Danny is Arthur did not get angry when he knew Danny had have sex with girlfriend. This is totally different and I guess it will never happen among Asian parents. Arthur plays a good husband role as well when they were celebrating his wife birthday to strengthen the bonding between each other. Aurthur tries to give what he can give to his wife and kids. 

Annie as a mother, she loves her sons very much. A close relationship between a mother and a son can be seen between Annie and Danny. The secure attachment of Danny towards his mother can be seen when he is hugging and playing piano together with his mother. Annie loves her kids very much as every mother does. The moment when she knew Danny likes Lorna, she is very supportive and positive toward Danny’s action. Meanwhile, Annie found out about Danny's audition, and begins to come to terms with the fact that she must let her son go and find his 'own' way. This does not sit well with Arthur, even as Annie risks their safety to contact her estranged father and arrange a home and life for Danny if they should decide to leave him behind. In the end, when Arthur hears on the radio that one of their underground colleagues has been shot and killed running from the authorities, he realizes that it is better for his son to pursue his dreams than to continue living a dangerous life on the run for which he bears no responsibility. Authoritative parenting can be seen in this film as Annie and Arthur allow Danny to explore more freely and having them to make their own decisions based upon their own reasoning even though there are sometimes to letting their kids go.  

Danny, a teenager who is overwhelming as a pianist had catch the attention of his music teacher.  His music teacher pushes him to audition for Julliard, a famous music school of world and his talent have gotten the chance to study at Julliard. Danny is an early matured teenage due to the environment he is living with. He wants to study at Julliard but he finally still put his parents on the top. His respect and maturity should be learned for every teenager as it is every important to put our parents at the first place.  While Danny’s music teacher pushes Danny to audition for Julliard, Danny also falls in love with Lorna, the teacher's teenage daughter. The intimate love can be seen between them. As the pressure to have his own life and realize his own dreams intensifies, Danny reveals his family secret to Lorna.  He learns the value of love in the relationship during his teenage stage. 

After watching this film, I believe every one is trying to play their own role well in real world. No matter what cultural we are living with, the values of love, maturity, honesty, intimacy, passionate, genuine, appreciation as well as trustworthy are every important in every stage of life. Every one is learning the new things in every moment and experience. Without love, laughing and happinness, I believe the world will turn into quiet and dark.  

Awakenings

Awakenings is a 1990 American drama film. It tells the true story of British neurologist which had, fictionalized as American Malcolm Sayer in 1969, discovered beneficial effects of the drug L-Dopa. He administered it to catatonic patients who survived the epidemic of encephalitis lethargica. Leonard Lowe and the rest of the patients were awakened after decades of catatonia and have to deal with a new life in a new time. Unfortunately, they were still turned into original condition after the temporary interesting life.

This is a very interesting movie as how is a life turned into a miracle and turned back again to the original condition. Dr. Sayer played the value of determination awesomely as the moment he realized something might be helped to awake those catatonic patients. He spent most of his time to observe patients and read all the information that he could find within the resources he has with. His passionate and determination have finally awoke patients by using L-Dopa. In my thought, he is a good doctor because he cares the health condition of patients genuinely as he worked for his own passionate as a doctor but not for the value of money. He had never give up the hope to treat the patients until he had finally created the miracle.

I had dropped my tears when I saw those moments when Leonard was awoke, when i saw his excitation toward his new life, when I saw the amaze when every patient was awoke, when I saw the facial expession as well as the psychological reaction of Mrs Lowe when she saw her son was finally awoke. The miracle which had been hoped by all the people surrounded them had finally occured. It is just amazing as no one had think of one day those patients will awake from the sickness. I realized there will always have miracle if we did really try to work very hard to achive our dream, academic performance and other things.

The value of love had also appeared in the whole process of film. Leonard had fall into love with Elena, his companionate love (Sternberg, 1986) with Elena had created the romantic scene in this beautiful film. After Leonard had turn back into original condition, Elena had also taking care of him though he decided to leave her. The awakening of patients had changed the life of every one. Specifically, the life of every patient as movements are the most important things for them. Even though the story had been ended sadly as all the patients turned into original posture, this had changed the view of appreciate and live life of every one. This had also changed the relationship between Dr Sayor with the nurse, Eleanor ashad had finally decided to date with her. 

Lastly, a sentence is still running in my mind 'I can't leave him alone, he'd die without me.' I saw the greatness of a mother's love toward her son. Mrs. Lowe, mother of Leonard who never stop her love toward her son even though he is suffering from sick. At the same time, I have think of my parents who always support, inspire and motivate me. They are the greatest in this world because if I live without their accompany during my growing process, I will not live with secure attachment (Bowlby, 1960) as Leonard did. Appreciation is very important as the life is short and we will never know the life will end.

Cinema Paradiso

This film is a very classic and golden film. The content of this movie tells the story of friendship and love. The flow of the movie is truly amazing and beautiful. It goes smoothly and every scene is just beautiful and touched.  

Salvatore Di Vita is the main character in the whole movie. His nicknamed Toto being called throughout this movie. One day, Toto's mother called to inform the news of passing of Alfredo in his hometown. When he heard this news, he laid on the bed and flashed back his life in his hometown, Giancaldo. Toto began to recall his old memories with Alfredo, which is his best friend since he was young. He is a film lover and he spent most of his pleasure time in Cinema. He had developed a friendship with Alfredo and he wanted to learn how to work with the machine but Alfredo initially did not want to teach him. During exam time, Alfredo took the same paper as Toto did. They exchanged the idea whereby Toto gave tips to Alfredo and Alfredo have to teach Toto how to run the machine. After Alfredo goes blind in a fire, Toto became the projectionist in the town. The stage theory of Erikson (1950) has been showed through the Toto's characteristic. Toto showed his 'industry' in learning to derive pleasure and satisfaction from the completion of tasks. Toto learned to solve his question in using the machine and he took the price of accomplishment. 

As Toto grew up, he studied in University and he fell in love with Elena. They got into  a romantic and intimate relationship as stated by Erickson (1950) but sadly their relationship did not last long as Elena's father did not approve their relationship. Toto went to the military service, throughout his military service Alfredo did not want to talk with anyone. After he has finished military service, Alfredo told him to leave and never come back to the town. Later, Toto became a famous film-maker. 

Toto attended Alfredo's funeral. He was in 'ego integrity' stage (Erickson, 1950) as he derived his wisdom from his life experiences and look back his life when he was with Alfredo. He watched the film strip that has been keeping by Alfredo long time ago. Later he only knew it was a gift from Alfredo. The short film gave by Alfredo contained all the romantic scenes which have been cut from the movies he watched in his childhood.

The secure attachment (Ainsworth, 1970) can be observed through the relationship between Toto and Alfredo. Alfredo had played the roles as a father and a friend toward Toto as the real father-son relationship was absence in Toto's life. Alfredo played a very important character in Toto's life as he had developed the confidence, courage, and passion in Toto. He helped and advised Toto when Toto was in frustration. Without Alfredo, Toto would not be a famous film-maker.
